Amazing Examples of Ukrainian Startups Disrupting IoT and Smart Tech

A world famous globalization catalyst and business analyst Sean Manchanda believes that Ukrainians are very creative. According to him, "today's digital revolution would be impossible without developments and contributions from Ukrainian engineers and IT specialists. A lot of innovations are happening here these days and that's all due to creativity and inventiveness of the Ukrainian people."

And things that are happening within the Ukrainian tech startups ecosystem right now prove Ukrainians to be very tech-savvy and inventive, especially when it comes to technology innovation.

I've found some cool cases of how Ukrainian startups and tech companies are disrupting the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart tech, and would like to share them with you.

Smart Greenhouse Technology

Ukraine-based company CyberGrow is specialized in IoT projects for smart agriculture. At the moment, the company is developing a smart greenhouse system that would enable remote monitoring of vertical planting.

In particular, CyberGrow focuses on aeroponics - the process of growing plants in an air or mist environment without the use of soil or any other aggregate medium (aka geoponics).

In order to grow plants and vegetables this way, the company built own wall plates and was able to grow 320 bushes of strawberry in a 0,5 sq. m. garden. Strawberries yielded on the 24th day after planting.

Aeroponics badly needed automation. Therefore, the CyberGrow team built own controller to manage the greenhouse and a fertigation and irrigation unit to prepare nutrient solutions for plants. The controller allows converting a greenhouse into a smart one because it manages all of the processes from watering and air conditioning to greenhouse monitoring in the Cloud.

CyberGrow is a modular system that consists of a control unit and sensors (up to 128 varieties) such as temperature and air humidity sensors, pH and CO2 sensors, ultrasound sensors measuring liquid levels, etc. Fertigation and irrigation unit is enabled for ultimate remote control through a programmable web interface.

At the moment, the company has one greenhouse that operates based on this smart system and working prototypes of a controller and fertigation and irrigation unit ready to go to mass production. Having introduced their project at several trade shows and IT events, CyberGrow is currently looking for investments to bring their smart tech / IoT project to life.

Another Ukrainian startup Blynk that brings to the market a platform with iOS and Android apps to control Arduino, Raspberry Pi and the likes over the Internet, has signed an agreement with a leading electronics manufacturer SparkFun. Under this agreement, SparkFun will produce a SparkFun Blynk Board microcomputer targeting at professional engineers, IoT specialists and electronics enthusiasts. SparkFun Blynk Board will be based on the ESP8266 microcontroller and managed by the Blynk software.

SparkFun Blynk Board will be sold as a standalone unit for only $29,95 and as a SparkFun IoT Starter Kit with Blynk Board featuring advanced functions at $69,95. The IoT Starter Kit will allow software developers to build own IoT apps based on the Blynk software, and access a variety of pre-installed tools and apps.
