Top 5 Web App Development Trends in 2019

When it comes to web apps, there’s plenty to be excited about, especially with all the progress we made last year.

Web apps are forecasted to play a crucial role in business over the next few years. Why? Well, it has to do with the dramatic rise in smartphones adoption across the planet.

This year, 63.4% of all mobile users are expected to access the Internet through a smartphone. By 2025, almost three quarters (72.6%) of Internet users will be accessing the web solely through a mobile device. That’s nearly 3.7 billion people!

Last year, people also spent a whopping $101 billion within apps (including in-app purchases, gaming, subscription fees, and paid downloads). So you can say that it’s time to get real serious about web app development.

So what can we expect to see over the next nine months? Here are the top five web app development trends for 2019.

1. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) Will Be Prominent and Ubiquitous

AI has been going from strength to strength across industries. As a core component of digitally transformed businesses, AI and ML technologies are well-placed to play a vital role in web app development.

For example, JavaScript-based libraries like Google’s TensorFlow.js and brain.js make adding ML into web apps a seamless experience. When it’s that easy, you can’t help but expect smart algorithms to be ubiquitous in 2019.

But what does it really mean? It means that web developers will be leveraging these ML libraries and other tools like Google’s Firebase Predictions and ML Kit to significantly enhance end-user experiences.

2. Single Page Applications (SPAs) Will Be Popular

Low-code Progressive Web Apps exploded on the scene a couple of years ago and have been growing steadily ever since. SPAs, on the other hand, have been around for a lot longer, but they only started to make a lot of noise in recent months.

You can expect more brands to take advantage of SPAs this year because they’re simple, quite easy to navigate, and is a godsend for people who get confused and frustrated with advanced mobile apps.

As the name suggests, it’s one long webpage with simplicity at the heart of its design. So don’t expect any complicated menus, intricate navigation, or device compatibility issues.

3. Serverless Will Be the Preferred Approach for Scaling Web Apps

If you want to get an idea about how popular serverless technologies are, just browse around and see what Amazon and Google have to say about it. These tech giants have been relentlessly focused on serverless architectures, and that should give you an idea about how important it is (and how important it’s going to be).

This year, AWS Lambda, Google Firebase, and others will help free developers from deploying, monitoring, maintaining, and scaling servers. In other words, they will be just focused on writing code for the next great web app.

Serverless offerings today are equipped with excellent features that can support every conceivable use-case. So all you have to do is plug your app to the serverless offering of your choice and deploy the application with a few clicks.

Whether your web app stores and serves a lot of images or runs on a read-heavy database, the underlying serverless architecture will ensure affordability, scalability, and (most importantly) speed.

4. Web Apps Will Be More Adaptable

In 2019, we have more digital technology than we know what to do with. This has lead to people disconnecting from their laptops outside of work, limiting screen time, and more.

However, smartphones seem to be the exception. While other devices are unplugged and locked away, smartphones continue to remain connected.

So websites and web apps need to be able to be highly adaptable and scalable on mobile devices. This means that not only will brands fit in everything within a small screen, but also improve design aesthetics and use the functionality more effectively.

5. JavaScript Will Be More Popular Than Ever Before

JavaScript development has been dominating this space for more than five years now. So it’s difficult to imagine that it could attract an even larger fanbase. But that’s what we’re going to see over the next nine months and beyond.

Tools and frameworks like Angular, React, and Vue.js create infinite opportunities for web app developers to supercharge their products. So expect more open-source libraries, components, and documentation to come out of JavaScript communities to help developers old and new build great products.

As it’s a relatively easy language to pick up, you can also expect more developers to add JavaScript to their programming arsenal.

In the same vein, the superset of JavaScript, TypeScript will also see increased adoption along with Facebook’s system query language, GraphQL. TypeScript works really well with GraphQL and adds strong types to JavaScript.

As a result, developers will be able to seamlessly build applications that are robust, optimized, and scalable. In fact, they won’t have to write any complex queries to deliver a great product.

These are just a few web app development trends that you can expect to see this year.
