Internet of Things (IoT) in general and Big Data in particular has been a top concern among many businesses globally in 2015. While some IT industry think tanks like Gartner keep viewing IoT as one of the main digital trends for 2016, the chance is slim that the Internet of Things will go mainstream in the corporate world next year. Factors that are keeping the IoT industry from booming and evolving at a rapid pace are pretty clear, but we've decided to approach our Twitter followers and ask them to name today's one biggest impediment to the IoT adoption within organizations. We've received 92 answers from some of the most active Twitterers and would like to share our survey results with you.
No surprise, most of IoT / digital experts we'd polled - 45% - pointed to "security and privacy issues" as the main gatekeeper to the IoT evolution. Further, 23% pointed to "lack of standards" and 15% of Twitterers named "lack of decision makers' understanding of IoT and buy-in" as the top reason holding back the IoT mass adoption. Yet, 13% of the Intersog survey participants mentioned other IoT inhibitors (see below).
Now let's see some of the responses that are actually included in this 13%:
- Cost of the IoT solutions development and deployment (according to @MediaMktgIT)
- "I think trust is a major factor - consumers have to be certain that their data is secure and that they have control of its use" (Kristina Metzger, global data center advisor @DataCenterCRE)
- "Biggest gatekeepers are challenges with business models!" (Ronald van Loon, Twitter's Top 10 Big Data influencer @Ronald_vanLoon)
- "People need to know more about data usage (not in a 20 pages agreement) and don't need 10 different apps and tools to manage few devices" (Greg Follain, data analyst @GregFollain)
- "I think there are couple things: the lack of standardized payment methods, lack of big data processing software available to general public, and fear of failure" (Tatyana Haid, IT executive search specialist @TatyanaHaid)
Other interesting comments we've received from the fellow Twitterers are:
- "1) Lack of company vision; 2) There is no clear ROI; 3) Too much talk is directed to the technology and not the business value; 4) Infrastructure and analytics. Companies are just not there yet to analyze and innovate the large amount of data." (@datasweden2016)
- "The number of devices plus the voluminous tidal wave of information will make for an interesting syncronization exercise. Also, keeping data manipulators from doing harm to businesses and consumers will need to shake itself out." (@thestashdaddy)
- "While there are lots of challenges related to IoT, in my opinion Security is its biggest inhibitor. Ironically it's also the biggest opportunity for companies who are focused on IoT security." (Robert Peteuil, a leading Enterprise Technology advisor @RobertPeteuil)
- "In Medtech, I think, we are behind the curve in embracing all that digital has to offer - and that includes IoT. That said, the change is now happening and we can't sit back and watch. Medtech needs to be at the forefront." (@medtechengine)
- "A really compelling use case to drive retail adoption." (@mselender)
