Our Wrap-Up Of The Kids Want Mobile Conference In Berlin

Last week, our Country Manager DACH attended Berlin's first conference and expo dedicated specifically to mobile apps and games for kids - The Kids Want Mobile. According to him, the conference turned out to be a great success and one of the best events he's attended this year (and he's a big events explorer, I must admit!).

One of the key conclusions Intersog has made after attending the conference is that Berlin is indeed the hot spot for building apps for kids. A lot of local startups and apps developers exhibited their innovative mobile solutions for the kids market, while keynote speakers from Dr.Panda GamesRavensburger Digital, Bubl, Gigglebug Entertainment, and other young and well established apps makers and publishers shared the ins and outs of effective kids apps development and marketing in the app stores.

Here're our takeaways beyond "the kids apps space is a happy business to be in":

  • Strong icon design is extremely important for the overall kids app's success, as it's the first touch point for the user
  • App store optimization uplifts your app's organic installs by 20%
  • Of 2,479 parents polled before the event, 63% believe kids apps should cost nothing in an app store. Yet, if an app is paid, parents would prefer to know it in advance and to be able to pay for it at download. That said, forget about in-app purchasing when building apps for kids!
  • Almost 40% of parents learn about new kids apps right in an app store (in the lists of featured apps / in respective categories), while 27% trust and follow recommendations by their friends / acquaintances.
  • With 80% of European kids aged 10 to 13 owning a smartphone or tablet, the kids apps market is becoming more and more significant now (according to the survey by Fox & Sheep).
  • In Germany, only 19% of all 9 year-olds owning a mobile device are allowed to decide on apps usage! That said, when building an app for kids under 10, make sure you can capture their parents' attention first and are compelling enough to make adults want to purchase / download it for their children.

We've also used this event as a good opportunity to increase our brand visibility on the local apps development market in Germany, and showcase some of our mobile products for kids such as 3D Coloring Book, Guzu Dragon, Hippie Hippo, etc.

We're looking forward to the next year's event where we'll most likely opt to exhibit our mobile apps development capabilities and portfolio for the kids apps market. Stay tuned!
